The Turkish word for “Buhur” is “incense”. It is the name given to substances such as plants, seeds, roots that emit a nice smell or fragrant smoke when burned.

In the Ottoman Empire, incense was used both for faith and for breaking bacteria and microbes in the air. Frankincense was also widely used in the places where the sultan would go.

Frankincense had an important place in Ottoman social life. So much so that there was a special group assigned to meet the fragrance needs of the palace.
